(I rarely drink and my balance is always iffy, at best.) . My body is shaky. And humans have assumed that I’ve had too much caffeine. (i’ve been effectively caffeine free since I stopped going to school, because withdrawal headaches are real. And caffeine is not the reason why I shake.) . I have had multiple sclerosis for the majority of my life. I will never achieve health in the way that many of the humans around me will. And I am still treated very generously. . THIS is thin privilege in action. My disabled body and chronic illness get free passes all the time because of my appearance. That will never not be messed up. Acknowledging thin privilege, particularly in the context of living with a chronic illness, matters a lot to me. Similarly, acknowledging weight stigma in the context of providing care to other humans, matters a lot to me. Neglecting to acknowledge these realities is neglecting to be thoroughly conscientious about true health. You cannot look at a human and see health or lack of health. What you believe that you can see is based on bias, stigma, and judgement. The more we examine at this, the better we are. Let’s stop making decisions about wellness based on appearance. We are more clever than that. Or we can be.
